Abuja, Nigeria – (African Boulevard News) – Tragedy struck on Sunday when gunmen invaded the Bege Baptist Church in Kaduna state, abducting 40 worshippers. A total of 25 people were left in captivity after 15 of the abductees managed to escape. However, in a recent development, more of the kidnapped have been reported to have regained their freedom.

According to local authorities, four more individuals have been rescued, bringing the total number of freed victims to 19. It is still unclear whether the rescue was facilitated by security operatives or if the abductees were released following the payment of the ransom.

The incident in Bege Baptist Church is one of many cases of kidnappings and banditry recorded in North-West Nigeria, with Kaduna being one of the worst-hit states. The Nigerian government has been criticized for its inability to curtail the security challenges facing the country.

The Baptist community in Nigeria has condemned the attack and called for urgent action to prevent similar occurrences. Reverend Israel Akanji, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna, said: “The incessant attacks and abductions of Christians during worship are becoming unbearable. We call on the government to step up and take decisive action to protect our people.”

The kidnapping has also garnered international attention, with the United States and the United Kingdom condemning the attack. UK High Commissioner, Catriona Laing, said: “I’m deeply concerned by the reports of the abduction of worshippers from the Bege Baptist Church in Chikun, Kaduna state. The UK stands with Nigeria in condemning all acts of terrorism, violence, and kidnapping.”

The latest rescue brings relief to the families of the victims and serves as a glimmer of hope to those still in captivity. However, the Nigerian government must take urgent steps to restore security in the country to prevent a recurrence.

The abduction of worshippers in Bege Baptist Church is one reminder of the worsening insecurity in Nigeria. The government must ramp up efforts to tackle the growing security challenges in the country. The Baptist community and other Nigerians are looking up to the government to secure their lives and property.

As the search for the remaining hostages continues, our thoughts are with the families of the victims, and we pray for their safe return.
