    Mass Displacements and Escalating Humanitarian Concerns

    The rise in displacement due to fighting and dwindling basic commodities is alarming. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM)’s Displacement Tracking Matrix reported that people have been displaced across the states of Khartoum, El Gezira, Sennar, White Nile, River Nile, and El Gedaref. Yesterday, Radio Dabanga reported that an attack by the RSF on two police stations left 20 policemen dead, including three senior officials.

In North Darfur’s capital of El Fasher, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 displaced people arrived in Chad on Friday. The situation is no better in South Sudan, where the IOM representative in Juba, Peter Van Der Auweraert, shared that at least 2,000 people arrived in the capital today.

    The situation of aid workers is worsening, as an aid worker from the International Organisation for Migration was killed two days ago after the vehicle he was traveling in with his family south of El Obeid in North Kordofan was caught in a crossfire between warring parties. This brings the number of aid workers killed since April 15 to five.

    Repeated calls for an Eid ceasefire from the highest levels within the international community have been ignored, leading to a rise in casualties among innocent civilians. Both sides are using heavy artillery, leaving several civilians dead and injured. The number of houses in the vicinity damaged by heavy artillery use is also increasing. The lack of humanitarian access to conflict-affected areas has also worsened the situation.

The clashes have caused a significant humanitarian crisis with more than 100,000 people internally displaced.

    The Background of the Conflict

    The conflict between the two groups began in the western region of Darfur, which has witnessed intermittent ethnic clashes and genocidal activities since 2003. However, the latest bout of fighting between SAF and RSF began in early July 2021. It came after SAF withdrew from the area, prompting RSF to take control of certain territories.
