Abuja, Nigeria – (African Boulevard News) – Five soldiers have been killed and several others injured following a mine explosion in Nigeria. The tragic incident occurred in the Gujba area of Yobe state, where troops were on a routine patrol on Tuesday.
According to reports, the soldiers were on foot when the mine detonated, causing a massive explosion that led to the instant death of five soldiers. The others were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, but it is believed to have been set up by Boko Haram insurgents.
Speaking on the incident, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, a spokesperson for the military, expressed deep sadness and condolences to the families of the soldiers who lost their lives.
He said, “We are saddened by the loss of our brave soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their fatherland. The military will not be deterred by these senseless attacks, and we will continue to fight terrorists and protect the nation’s territorial integrity.”
The Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, also expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, describing their death as a huge loss to the nation.
He said, “We condole with the families and loved ones of the brave soldiers who died while serving the nation. We will continue to support our security agencies in their efforts to end insurgency and restore peace in the northeast region.”
This latest attack comes amid an upsurge in Boko Haram’s activities in Nigeria’s northeast region. The terrorist group has been responsible for numerous attacks on military and civilian targets in recent times, leading to the loss of several lives.
The Nigerian government has been working tirelessly to contain the insurgency, with the military launching several operations to combat the group. However, the efforts have been largely unsuccessful, as the terrorists continue to carry out deadly attacks.
The government has reiterated its commitment to ending the insurgency and restoring peace in the region. It has also called on the international community to support its efforts in the fight against terrorism.
