Khartoum, Sudan – (African Boulevard News) – In an effort to end the years-long conflict in Sudan, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan’s special envoy arrived in Ethiopia on Thursday to discuss ways of bringing peace to the region. The envoy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, urged rebel groups in the country to put down their arms and engage in dialogue with the government.
Dagalo, who is also the deputy head of Sudan’s ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC), stressed the importance of unity and collective action in securing a more stable and prosperous future for Sudan. He stated that the government was committed to ending the conflict and achieving lasting peace through peaceful means.
“Without peace, there can be no development. We urge all rebel groups to put down their arms and join us at the negotiation table. We are ready to work together to find a lasting solution to the conflict in Sudan,” Dagalo said.
The envoy’s visit to Ethiopia comes amid reports of renewed fighting between government forces and rebel groups in the Darfur region. The conflict, which began in 2003, has left tens of thousands of people dead and displaced millions from their homes.
In recent months, Sudan’s government has stepped up efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict through negotiations with various rebel groups. Last month, the government signed a peace deal with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), one of the country’s largest rebel groups.
The deal, which was hailed as a major breakthrough towards ending the conflict, outlines a framework for a power-sharing government and the integration of rebel forces into the national army.
However, other rebel groups have yet to sign on to the deal, and the conflict continues to simmer in parts of the country.
Analysts say that while Dagalo’s visit to Ethiopia is a positive step towards ending the conflict, it will take more than just words to achieve lasting peace in Sudan.
“The government’s efforts to negotiate with rebel groups are commendable, but we need to see concrete actions being taken to address the root causes of the conflict,” said Ahmed Adam, a Sudanese political analyst.
“Until there is genuine political will on all sides to find a lasting solution, the conflict will continue to drag on,” he added.
