Kampala, Uganda – (African Boulevard News) – The Uganda military has launched a massive operation to pursue the kidnappers who abducted dozens of students from a boarding school in Kasese district. Reports indicate that on Wednesday, June 15, the attackers took more than 100 students from the school, killing three security guards and injuring several others.
According to sources, the rebels fled towards Virunga on the border with Uganda and Rwanda, a globally renowned sanctuary for rare species including mountain gorillas. The Uganda military, in collaboration with their Rwandan counterparts, is now pursuing the perpetrators to rescue the abducted students and bring the culprits to book.
The incident has caused widespread concern among parents, education stakeholders, and the general public. Calls for swift action to rescue the students have been mounting, with many criticizing the government for not doing enough to guarantee the security of students in schools.
Speaking to African Boulevard News, the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, expressed her concern over the incident, saying that the safety of students was paramount. “We are working closely with the security agencies to ensure the safe return of the students. We call upon everyone to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities in their efforts,” she said.
In a separate statement, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso, assured the public that the military was doing everything possible to rescue the students. “We have deployed our forces in the area to track down the kidnappers and rescue the students. We are working with our counterparts across the border to ensure that the perpetrators do not escape,” she said.
As the operation to rescue the abducted students continues, the government has called on the public to provide any useful information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of the kidnappers. The incident underscores the need for more robust security measures to protect students in schools and other learning institutions in the country.
In conclusion, the incident has brought to light the security challenges facing schools and education institutions in the country. The government must take decisive action to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future. It is the responsibility of the government to guarantee the safety and security of students everywhere in the country.
