Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – (African Boulevard News) – The World Food Program (WFP) and USAID have suspended part of their food aid to Ethiopia due to diversions. The announcement by WFP comes a day after the American government made a similar announcement regarding their food aid.

WFP stated that they have suspended the distribution of 15% of their aid in the eastern part of the country, due to “the diversion of 50,000 metric tons of food aid”. This diversion refers to the decision of local authorities to take control of the aid distribution instead of allowing WFP to do so. The move comes as a surprise to WFP, who state they have been working with the Ethiopian government to address concerns regarding aid diversion.

USAID, on the other hand, has suspended the distribution of 10% of their aid in the Tigray region, due to the “forced registration of beneficiaries” by local authorities. This refers to reports that local authorities in Tigray have been forcing individuals to register as beneficiaries, even if they do not require aid. USAID has stated that they will not resume aid distribution until they can ensure that aid is reaching those who require it.

The suspension of aid by WFP and USAID has raised concerns about the impact that it will have on the population, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Tigray region. WFP has stated that they are working to mitigate the impact of the suspension, by redirecting aid to other areas in need.

This announcement has also raised concerns about the effectiveness of aid distribution in Ethiopia, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability in the process. The Ethiopian government has stated that they are committed to addressing concerns regarding aid diversion and will work to ensure that aid is reaching those who require it.

In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia, the suspension of aid by WFP and USAID highlights the need for greater attention to be paid to the issue of aid distribution. With millions of Ethiopians relying on aid for their survival, ensuring the effective distribution of aid is critical. The recent announcements by WFP and USAID serve as a reminder that much work remains to be done in this area.
