Cairo, Egypt – (African Boulevard News) – Female circumcision, also known as female genital mutilation (FGM), is a common practice in Egypt, prevalent even today. Despite the campaigns to prevent it, millions of women have already undergone the procedure and are living with its physical and psychological consequences. However, there is hope as a Cairo-based clinic is now offering medical and psychological support to circumcised women, so they can regain control of their bodies and lives.

The clinic, called Al-Salam – meaning peace – was established in 2013 by Dr. Ghada Hatem, a renowned French-Egyptian gynecologist. It offers a comprehensive range of services to women who have undergone FGM, from reconstructive surgery to counseling for emotional trauma. Hatem founded the clinic in response to the overwhelming need for medical and mental health services for women who have been subjected to FGM.

“It’s not just a physical issue,” Hatem said. “It’s a psychological and social problem as well. Women who have had FGM suffer from depression, anxiety, and a deep sense of shame and worthlessness. They feel like they have been robbed of their femininity and sexuality.”

Al-Salam clinic offers a multi-disciplinary approach to healing. Medical treatment includes reconstructive surgery, antibiotics to prevent infection, and pain management. Mental health services include individual and group therapy, as well as social support to help women regain their confidence and sense of self-worth.

“The clinic has been life-changing for me,” said 28-year-old Amira, who underwent FGM as a young girl. “I felt like I was alone in my pain and suffering, but coming here and talking to other women who have gone through the same thing has helped me feel less alone. I’m a different person now.”

The clinic’s holistic approach has attracted international attention, and it has become a model for other clinics around the world. Dr. Hatem’s work has been recognized and awarded by several organizations, including the French Legion of Honour.

While campaigns to prevent FGM in Egypt are gaining momentum, the 28 million women who have already undergone the procedure need support like that provided by Al-Salam. As Dr. Hatem puts it, “We cannot erase the past, but we can help women reclaim their bodies and their lives.”

In conclusion, the Al-Salam clinic is a beacon of hope for the millions of women who have been subjected to FGM in Egypt. Its holistic approach to healing, combining medical and mental health services, has helped many women regain control of their bodies and their lives. The clinic’s work is a reminder that healing is possible, even in the face of significant trauma.
