Kinshasa, DRC – (African Boulevard News) – Protesters took to the streets of Kinshasa on Friday, May 21, as police clashed with opposition supporters protesting against President Felix Tshisekedi’s rule. The demonstrations come amid rising tensions in the country, where political instability and corruption have plagued the nation for years.

According to reports, police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds in the capital city. Protesters responded by throwing stones and setting tires on fire, leading to chaos in the streets and leaving many injured. Eyewitnesses reported seeing several individuals being arrested, including opposition leaders.

The opposition parties have accused President Tshisekedi of violating the constitution by forming a coalition government with supporters of former President Joseph Kabila. The coalition government was formed after disputed elections in 2018, which saw Tshisekedi declared as the winner following allegations of rigging and fraud.

“The people of Congo deserve better than this,” said opposition leader Martin Fayulu. “We cannot allow this government to continue its corrupt and unconstitutional practices.”

The protests have been brewing for weeks, with tensions escalating after reports of police brutality against opposition activists. The government has denied any wrongdoing, saying that it is committed to free and fair elections and protecting the rights of all citizens.

The clashes in Kinshasa have drawn international attention, with the United Nations calling on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from violence. “We urge the government to listen to the concerns of the people and work towards finding a peaceful solution to the crisis,” said a UN spokesperson.

The situation remains volatile, with further protests expected in the coming days. Opposition leaders have called for a nationwide strike, while the government has warned against any further violence. The country is still recovering from years of conflict and instability, with many fearing a return to violence if the situation is not resolved soon.

As the situation unfolds, the world watches with bated breath, hoping that a peaceful solution can be found before it’s too late. The people of Congo deserve better than violence and unrest, and it’s up to the government to listen to their concerns and work towards a brighter future for all.
