Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – (African Boulevard News) – Burkina Faso has been rocked by two suspected jihadist attacks that have left at least 20 civilians dead, including women and children. The attacks occurred between Monday and Wednesday in the central-eastern region of the country. Security and local sources confirmed the tragic events to AFP.
The first attack took place on Monday in Kompienga as a group of heavily armed militants stormed the village of Pansi, firing indiscriminately at residents who were not able to flee in time. At least 13 people were killed in this attack. Several homes and shops were also set ablaze, adding to the chaos and destruction.
The second attack occurred two days later in the village of Bouna, leaving seven people dead. This time, the militants targeted a market where they opened fire on innocent civilians. The attackers fled the scene before security forces arrived.
“These attacks are clearly aimed at destabilizing the country and creating panic among the population,” said a local government official who wished to remain anonymous. “We are doing everything we can to apprehend those responsible, but it is a daunting task given the vast and remote areas they operate in.”
Burkina Faso has been plagued by violence from jihadist groups, particularly in the northern and eastern regions of the country. These groups, who have links to Al Qaeda and ISIS, have been responsible for scores of attacks on civilians, security personnel, and government installations. The violence has displaced thousands of people and created a humanitarian crisis in the country.
The latest attacks have once again highlighted the vulnerability of civilians and the urgent need for greater protection and support from the government. “These attacks are a tragedy and a reminder that we need to do more to protect our people,” said a local community leader.
The government has vowed to take decisive action to combat the jihadist threat and restore peace and stability to the country. “We will not rest until we bring those behind these attacks to justice,” said a government spokesperson. “We are also working to strengthen security measures and improve communication with local communities to prevent future attacks.”
As the people of Burkina Faso mourn the loss of their loved ones, the international community has expressed solidarity and support. “We stand with the people of Burkina Faso and condemn these heinous acts of violence,” said a UN spokesperson. “We call on all parties to respect human rights and the rule of law, and to work together towards a peaceful and prosperous future for all.”
