Porto-Novo, Benin – (African Boulevard News) – Benin has pledged its unwavering support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in response to the recent coup in Niger. The West African nation has also called for the immediate release of Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum, who was detained following the military uprising.
In a show of solidarity, Benin has assured ECOWAS that it will stand by any actions taken by the regional bloc to address the political crisis in Niger. The country’s commitment to upholding stability and democracy in the region marks a significant step towards resolving the current turmoil in Niger.
Speaking on behalf of Benin, President Patrice Talon emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and unity in tackling such challenges. He stated, “Benin fully supports ECOWAS in its efforts to restore peace and stability in Niger. We condemn any attempts to undermine democracy and call for the immediate release of President Bazoum.”
ECOWAS, comprising 15 member states, has a long-standing commitment to upholding democratic principles and good governance in the West African region. The organization has been at the forefront of mediation and conflict resolution efforts, intervening in several political crises to ensure the preservation of democracy.
The recent coup in Niger has raised concerns about the stability of the region and the potential for further political instability. By pledging its support for ECOWAS, Benin sends a strong message that any attempts to undermine democratic institutions will not be tolerated.
The international community has also condemned the coup and expressed solidarity with Niger. The United Nations, the African Union, and various other regional and international bodies have called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order in Niger.
Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, stressed the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. He stated, “The unfolding events in Niger are deeply troubling. We urge all parties to engage in dialogue and work towards a peaceful solution.”
The situation in Niger remains fluid, and the international community continues to closely monitor developments. The timely intervention and support from countries like Benin and regional organizations like ECOWAS are crucial in maintaining stability and ensuring the peaceful transition of power in Niger.
Benin’s pledge of support for ECOWAS further strengthens regional efforts to address the crisis in Niger. With the collective determination from neighboring countries, the restoration of democracy and the release of President Bazoum can hopefully be achieved, bringing stability back to the nation and the wider West African region.
