Diaspora, Africa – (African Boulevard News) – Demonstrators gathered outside the Moroccan parliament in Rabat to protest against the visit of Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, the first such visit by a head of Israeli parliament. The rally held in solidarity with Palestine was attended by hundreds of Moroccans, including activists, political leaders, and individuals from all walks of life.
The protesters chanted slogans, waving Palestinian flags and placards that read “Free Palestine” and “No to normalization with Israel.” They also demanded that the government revoke Ohana’s invitation, calling it a violation of Morocco’s commitment to the Palestinian cause and the struggle for their rights.
Many were quick to point out that Ohana’s visit comes at a time when Israel is stepping up its aggression against Palestinians. The latest wave of violence in Gaza resulted in the deaths of more than 250 Palestinians, including numerous children, in May 2021 alone.
“We reject the normalization of ties with Israel, which is occupying Palestine and violating the rights of its people,” said Mohammed Bouanani, a protester at the rally. “The Israeli parliament speaker’s visit to Morocco is an insult to the millions of Palestinians living under occupation and besieged in Gaza.”
The rally was organized by the Moroccan Association for Solidarity with Palestine, the Moroccan Human Rights Association, and other civil society organizations. The organizers noted that the protest was peaceful and aimed to express support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
In a statement issued after the rally, the organizers called on the Moroccan government to cancel Ohana’s visit and take a firm stance against Israel’s occupation and violations of Palestinian human rights. They also urged the government to support the call for an international investigation into Israel’s recent attacks on Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
The rally is the latest in a series of protests against the normalization of relations between several Arab countries and Israel. The issue has become increasingly contentious in the wake of Israel’s recent actions against Palestinians, leading many to question the morality of establishing diplomatic ties with the country.
Moroccans are proud of their long-standing support for the Palestinian cause, with many seeing it as an integral part of their national identity. The rally shows that the people of Morocco remain committed to this cause and will continue to express their support for the Palestinian people until they achieve their freedom and independence.
