Khartoum, Sudan – (African Boulevard News) – On Tuesday 20th June, World Refugee Day, Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, spoke out about the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Grandi deplored the consequences of the continued fighting, which has forced half a million refugees to flee the country, with a further two million people internally displaced.

“Unless the guns are silenced,” warned Grandi, “this tragic exodus of people will continue.”

The conflict in Sudan has been ongoing for several years, with violence and unrest spreading throughout the country. The situation has only worsened after the country was rocked by a military coup in 2019 that led to the ousting of President Omar al-Bashir. Despite efforts to establish a transitional government, the country remains plagued by violence, poverty, and political instability.

The impact on civilians has been devastating, with families torn apart, homes destroyed, and communities left devastated. In his statement, Grandi highlighted the urgent need for peace in Sudan, saying, “The conflict in Sudan must end, and it must end now. The people of Sudan deserve to live in peace and security, free from the fear of violence and persecution.”

The situation in Sudan has also put a strain on the country’s neighbouring countries, with many forced to host large numbers of refugees. Fleeing families have had to endure challenging conditions in overcrowded camps, with limited access to basic amenities such as food, water, and healthcare.

The UN’s Refugee Agency has been working to provide assistance to the refugees, but the scale of the problem is immense, and more needs to be done. Grandi called for increased support to help those affected by the conflict, saying, “We urge the international community to step up its efforts to support the people of Sudan. We need more resources to provide for their basic needs and help them rebuild their lives.”

Despite the challenges, there are some signs of hope. The transitional government has taken steps towards peace talks, and humanitarian organizations are working to provide assistance to those in need. However, much more needs to be done to end the conflict, bring stability to the region, and provide support to those affected by the crisis.

In conclusion, the situation in Sudan is dire, and urgent action is needed to end the conflict and provide assistance to those impacted. The UN’s call to arms highlights the severity of the situation and the need for change. It is essential that the international community comes together to provide support to the people of Sudan, to help them rebuild their lives and create a brighter future.
