Abuja, Nigeria – (African Boulevard News) – The much-anticipated TotalEnergies U17 AFCON competition is set to kick off, and Nigeria’s Golden Eagles are rejecting the ‘favourites’ tag. Despite having a stellar record, having qualified for the World Cup 12 times and won it five times, the team’s players and coaching staff are keeping a level head ahead of the opening match.

In an interview with African Boulevard News, Golden Eagles’ assistant coach, Nduka Ugbade, said, “We are not the favourites. We are just one of the 12 teams that qualified for the tournament. We have to take every game as it comes and give our best.”

The competition will be held in Morocco from 13th to 31st of July 2021. Grouped alongside Tanzania, Algeria, and Congo, Nigeria will begin their campaign against Tanzania on July 14th at the Stade Municipal de Nouadhibou.

Despite being the most successful team in the history of the tournament, the Golden Eagles’ coach, Fatai Amoo, is aware that the other teams are prepared to challenge his team’s dominance. He noted that their previous successes would not play a significant role in the coming games, as every team is out to win.

He said, “We cannot rely on our past successes, but instead, we have to remain focused on the task ahead. Our players must understand that they cannot underrate any team in the competition because every game is crucial.”

The Golden Eagles’ current team comprises young players who are eager to stake their claim in Nigerian football. Still, Ugbade is hoping that they will not feel the pressure and would enjoy the game.

“We have a good and vibrant team, and the players understand their roles. We want them to enjoy the tournament and not feel intimidated by situations,” Ugbade said.

The TotalEnergies U17 AFCON tournament will be a platform for African teams to showcase their talents and learn from their mistakes. With Nigeria looking to add to their record trophies, the Golden Eagles’ players and coaching staff are working hard to ensure they are ready to compete with the best.

In conclusion, despite being the most successful team in the history of the tournament, the Golden Eagles are not getting ahead of themselves. They are focused on taking each game as it comes and giving their best. The competition is set to be fierce, and the Golden Eagles will need to be at their best to come out on top.
