Abuja, Nigeria – (African Boulevard News) – A former Nigerian politician has been sentenced to nine years in prison in the United Kingdom over his involvement in a heinous organ trafficking plot. Anthony Okolo, a former Nigerian Deputy Governor, was found guilty of using his connections to lure vulnerable people from Nigeria into the UK, where their organs were harvested for sale on the black market.

The scheme, which came to light in 2018, involved several of Okolo’s associates who preyed on the poor and desperate from his hometown in Nigeria. The victims were promised lucrative jobs and a better life in the UK, only to be forced into giving up their organs upon arrival. The operation was uncovered by the UK police following a tip-off, leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

The trial, which lasted for over a year, found Okolo to be the “motivating factor” behind the plot. The 62-year-old was found guilty of conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs and conspiracy to traffic persons for exploitation. His sentence was delivered by the Southwark Crown Court in London on May 4, 2023.

Justice Sarah Martin, who presided over the trial, condemned Okolo’s actions, stating that “the trafficking of human beings for the purpose of exploitation is one of the gravest violations of human rights.” She also noted the callousness of the operation, which left many victims scarred for life.

The news of Okolo’s sentencing has sent shockwaves across Nigeria, with many expressing outrage and disgust at the former politician’s actions. Nigeria’s anti-trafficking agency, NAPTIP, has applauded the UK authorities for their efforts in combating the scourge of human trafficking and organ harvesting.

“The sentencing of Anthony Okolo sends a clear message that human trafficking will not be tolerated,” said Julie Donli, the Director-General of NAPTIP. “We call on Nigerians to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may lead to the trafficking of persons.”

The case highlights the need for greater awareness and enforcement of laws against human trafficking and organ harvesting in Nigeria and other parts of the world. It also serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, no matter how powerful or influential they may be.

Okolo’s conviction and sentencing are a victory for the fight against human trafficking and a warning to those who seek to profit from the misery of others. The hope is that this case will serve as a deterrent to others and contribute to the eradication of this heinous crime.
