Bamako, Mali – (African Boulevard News) – Mali’s United Nations peacekeeping mission, MINUSMA, is entering a challenging next phase as it prepares to withdraw from the country. The pullout, set to be completed by December 31, is facing difficulties in its implementation, according to officials.
“We remain on the right track towards the mission’s closure, which should indeed be completed by December 31. However, difficulties have emerged in the implementation of this first phase of the withdrawal,” said the head of MINUSMA, El-Ghassim Wane.
The United Nations has been present in Mali since 2013, following a separatist rebellion and a coup that plunged the country into a state of instability. MINUSMA was established to support the return of stability and to protect civilians.
The initial phase of the withdrawal involved consolidating the mission’s presence in the major population centers. However, challenges and security threats have arisen, making it a difficult task for the peacekeeping force.
One major concern is the increasing violence perpetrated by armed groups in the northern and central regions of the country. The UN has recorded a surge in attacks against civilians, peacekeepers, and government institutions. These attacks have not only hampered the mission’s ability to withdraw but have also worsened the security situation in Mali.
Despite these setbacks, the United Nations remains committed to completing the withdrawal. The organization is working closely with the Malian government to address the security challenges and create an enabling environment for a smooth transition.
“The next phase of the withdrawal will be critical and undoubtedly challenging. We are aware of the risks and complexities involved, and we are collaborating closely with our partners to ensure the safety of our personnel and the success of the mission,” Wane added.
As the UN faces these difficulties, the international community is closely monitoring the situation in Mali. An unstable Mali not only threatens regional security but also undermines the progress made so far in stabilizing the country.
The successful completion of the MINUSMA withdrawal is crucial for Mali’s long-term peace and development. It will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including the government, security forces, and international partners.
The United Nations and its peacekeeping mission, MINUSMA, have played a significant role in stabilizing Mali over the past decade. As the mission faces these challenges, the hope is that a sustainable solution will be found, ensuring that Mali continues on its path towards lasting peace and prosperity.
