Cairo, Egypt – (African Boulevard News) – Egyptian researcher and Bologna University alumnus, Patrick Zaki, has finally arrived back in Italy following his presidential pardon by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Zaki, who had been detained in Egypt for over two years, left the country a few days ago and touched down in Rome on Sunday (Jul. 23). His return to Italy has been met with both relief and jubilation by supporters and human rights activists around the world.

Zaki’s case had gained international attention and condemnation, with many expressing concerns over his arbitrary detention and alleged torture while in custody. He was arrested in February 2020 upon his arrival in Egypt to visit his family and faced charges of spreading false news and inciting unrest. His release came as a shock to many, as Egypt’s human rights record has been heavily criticized in recent years.

The news of Zaki’s arrival in Italy was met with celebrations by his friends, colleagues, and supporters. Social media platforms were flooded with messages of congratulations and support for the young researcher. His case has become a symbol of hope for those who have been fighting for justice and human rights in Egypt.

Zaki’s lawyer, Giulia Bongiorno, expressed her elation at his release and return to Italy, saying, “We are overjoyed that Patrick is finally back on Italian soil. This is a victory not only for him but for all those who have been advocating for justice and human rights.”

The Italian government has been actively involved in advocating for Zaki’s release throughout his detention. Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, expressed his satisfaction with the development, stating, “We are glad that Patrick Zaki is finally free and back in Italy. We will continue to support him in his fight for justice.”

Bologna University, where Zaki was studying at the time of his arrest, also welcomed his return. In a statement, the university said, “We are thrilled to have Patrick back with us. His resilience and courage have been an inspiration to all of us. We will continue to support him in his academic pursuits.”

Zaki’s case has shed light on the broader issue of human rights violations in Egypt and the urgent need for reforms. International human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have called for the release of other prisoners of conscience and the improvement of Egypt’s human rights situation.

As Zaki settles back into his life in Italy, the fight for justice and human rights in Egypt continues. His release serves as a reminder that perseverance and international pressure can make a difference. The hope is that Zaki’s case will be a catalyst for change in Egypt, leading to a more tolerant and democratic society.
