Diaspora, Africa – (African Boulevard News) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for urgent and comprehensive reform of the global financial architecture. Guterres highlighted the failures of the current system, stressing the need for deep structural change to ensure a more equitable and inclusive global economy.

During a summit in Johannesburg on Thursday (Aug. 24), Guterres emphasized that the financial system has not fulfilled its fundamental purpose as a global safety net. He argued that the current architecture has perpetuated inequalities, increased financial instability, and failed to address the needs of developing countries.

“The current financial system has failed in its basic function as a global safety net. And so, it needs deep structural reform,” Guterres stated.

The UN chief’s call for reform comes amid growing concerns about the disparities and vulnerabilities within the global financial system. The COVID-19 pandemic has only further exposed the inequalities and weaknesses of the current architecture.

Guterres stressed the urgent need to address the root causes of financial instability and inequity. He highlighted the importance of putting people at the center of the financial system and ensuring that it works for everyone, not just a select few.

“We need a financial system that is aligned with people’s needs and aspirations, that supports sustainable development, and that contributes to a just transition to a low-carbon, resilient future,” Guterres asserted.

Experts and stakeholders have echoed Guterres’ call for reform. They argue that the current financial system perpetuates a cycle of debt and dependence in many developing countries, while enabling the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few.

The reform proposals put forward by Guterres include improved regulation and oversight, increased transparency, and stronger international cooperation. These measures aim to prevent financial crises, promote economic stability, and ensure the fair distribution of resources.

As global leaders and policymakers continue to grapple with the challenges posed by the current financial architecture, Guterres’ call for reform serves as a reminder of the urgent need for change. The UN chief’s emphasis on equity, inclusivity, and sustainability provides a roadmap for shaping a more resilient and just global economy.

In the face of mounting economic and social challenges, transforming the global financial system is not just a necessity; it is an opportunity to create a more prosperous and equitable future for all. The road to reform may be long and complex, but as Guterres and others have emphasized, it is a journey worth undertaking.
