Diaspora, Africa – (African Boulevard News) – Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored a brace for Nottingham Forest to help them secure a dramatic 4-3 victory over Southampton in an enthralling seven-goal thriller at the City Ground.
The on-loan Liverpool player has been in impressive form since joining the English Championship side in January, and his two goals on Saturday took his tally to seven goals in 10 games.
Awoniyi has been a key player for Forest, particularly at home, where he has scored most of his goals. Against Southampton, he was instrumental in securing all three points for his side after they had initially gone behind.
The first half saw Forest take an early lead through a Lewis Grabban goal, but Southampton responded quickly, and goals from Nathan Redmond and Danny Ings put the visitors 2-1 up.
However, Forest responded with two goals in quick succession, first from Sammy Ameobi, and then from Awoniyi, to take a 3-2 lead into half-time.
The second half continued in the same vein, with both sides creating chances and looking to find the back of the net. Southampton equalized through Che Adams, before Awoniyi scored his second of the game to secure all three points for Forest.
The victory sees Forest keep their faint playoff hopes alive, and manager Chris Hughton was full of praise for Awoniyi after the game.
“Taiwo has been exceptional for us since he arrived, and he showed again today what a top-class player he is,” Hughton said.
“His two goals were crucial for us, and I’m delighted for him and the team that we were able to get the three points in such an entertaining game.”
Awoniyi, who is hoping to earn a place in the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, was equally delighted with his performance.
“I’m just happy to be playing and contributing to the team,” he said. “The City Ground has been good to me, and I’m pleased to have been able to score two goals and help the team win.”
Overall, it was a thrilling encounter that showcased the quality of the Championship and the talent of Awoniyi. Nottingham Forest will hope to build on this performance and continue their push for a playoff place with just a few games remaining.
