“Parents say that before, when they did not see their children, they worried because of the gangs in their neighborhood. Now they know they are at the music school; they are learning to play music,” shared Joseph Jean, a resident of Port au Prince.

“We believe that by providing the children with an alternative, something that they can focus on and be passionate about, we can steer them away from the allure of the gangs,” said Father Osuna.

The music schools not only provide them with technical skills but also serve as a support system, helping to instill discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence.
“The impact of music on these children is tremendous. They become more focused, disciplined, and motivated. It’s like music gives them a purpose,” remarked music teacher, Marie Louise.
The positive effects of these music programs are starting to show. Children who were once on the fringes of society, vulnerable to the lure of gangs, are now finding solace in their passion for music. The schools have become a safe haven for the children, providing a sense of belonging and purpose.
However, the challenges are not to be overlooked. Limited resources and funding hinder the growth and reach of these programs. Many children still remain at risk, unable to access the transformative power of music.
